Registration and payment can be completed online, by phone at 906-487-2073, or at the SDC Ticket Office. A parent or guardian must sign a waiver of liability and concussion awareness form prior to participation. The SDC is not responsible for lost or stolen property. Please do not leave valuables unattended.

Designed for athletes looking to improve their performance and fitness level, the Summer Strength & Conditioning Camp offers sport-specific, collegiate-level physical training to prepare athletes for the upcoming season. Lead by the MTU Strength & Conditioning staff, athletes will learn and develop proper training techniques in order to improve overall fitness, increase performance potential, and decrease the risk of injury. Athletes will engage in a progressive training program that translates across a wide range of sports with the intent of improving agility, strength, flexibility, and speed. An emphasis will be placed on performance tracking throughout the camp, so athletes will be able to monitor their progress in detail throughout. Participants will also receive a free 3-month SDC membership for the duration of the ten-week program (outside of training time), which includes use of the fitness center (must be 16+ years of age*), pool, and multipurpose room. Take advantage of the opportunity to receive elite-level training in a varsity collegiate setting, right here in the Keweenaw!

Phases:

  • Weeks 1-2: Integration (initial assessment)
  • Weeks 3-6: Accumulation
  • Weeks 7-9: Intensification
  • Week 10: Peak (final assessment)

Class size is limited.

June 10 - August 22

Registration closes June 3. No class July 1, 3 or 4.

The Black Group (Grades 9-12) is full. If you would like to be placed on a wait list, please send the following information to sportscamps@mtu.edu: Parent name, participant name, address, phone number and email, DOB, and grade as of Fall 2019.

Special Requirements

Open to boys and girls, grades 6-12 as of Fall 2019. Comfortable athletic clothing (t-shirt, shorts, leggings, etc.) & appropriate athletic footwear (non-marking sole cross trainers and/or weight lifting shoes).

* Must be 16 or older to use the Fitness Center without a parent. If under 16, participants can attend an orientation with Fitness Center coordinator Ann Hoover which allows them to use the Fitness Center with a parent. See Youth Fitness Center Usage policy.

Cost

$300 per participant (includes 3-month SDC membership)


About the Coaches

Tyler Shelast

Tyler Shelast is in his seventh full season as the Strength and Conditioning coach for Michigan Tech varsity athletics. The former Huskies forward played five years of professional hockey, most notably signing a two-year contract with the NHL’s Dallas Stars. Shelast had a four-year career at Michigan Tech where he scored 51 career goals with 36 assists for 87 points in 151 career games. The Kelowna, British Columbia, native is certified as a strength and conditioning specialist by the National Strength and Conditioning Association. He trains a number of former Huskies who are current professional hockey players during the summer. Shelast, and his wife, Mandy, reside in Houghton.

 

Devin Pindral enters his second season working full-time as Assistant Strength & Conditioning coach while earning a Bachelor of Science in Sports & Fitness Management at Michigan Tech. While working across all varsity sports on campus, Devin has been an integral part of the success of both individuals and teams, including assisting with the training of notable athletes like Tanner Kero and Matt Roy as well as the highly successful MTU Women’s Basketball Team and Women’s Volleyball Team. A native of Painesdale, Michigan, Pindral was a multi-sport athlete at Jeffers High School and went on to serve five years in the United States Army as a Military Police Officer, completing his career at the rank of Sergeant.
